If you haven’t heard of “Flynn Lives” then you’ve probably been living in a cave (or it’s your first trip to my site)!

For the few of you that might not know what it is, it was a group of followers/fans out to prove that Kevin Flynn (from the original 1982 TRON movie) was still alive and their efforts to actually try to find him.

This is where you enter the realm of what’s known as an “ARG”.  ARG stands for Alternate Reality Game.  I like the Wikipedia definition: ‘An ARG is an interactive narrative that uses the real world as a platform, often involving multiple media and game elements, to tell a story that may be affected by participants’ ideas or actions. ‘ If you take the time to go to Wikipedia and read the entry on it, you’ll see a reference to “I Love Bees” (which was a promotion for Halo 2).  That ARG was developed by 42 Entertainment, who are also responsible for bringing us the “Flynn Lives” ARG.

The Flynn Lives ARG was a huge viral marketing platform for the TRON: Legacy movie.  The ARG spanned across countless websites and also some live events (Like at last year’s San Francisco WonderCon) and had lots of puzzles and challenges (as well as prizes) for its member/participants.

42 Entertainment put together an impressive viral marketing campaign for TRON: Legacy with “Flynn Lives” and is listed as an official Webby Awards honoree in the category of “Mobile and Experience Marketing”.

On an interesting side-note, if you check out the list of honorees at the link above and find the listing for TRON Legacy: FLYNN LIVES you’ll see a link for a page that gives you an overview of the whole viral marketing campaign.  The site has photos, videos, screenshots and captures of websites that cover the scope of the campaign.  At the very bottom of the page there are screenshots of websites listed under “EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT TRON LEGACY”  You may notice a familiar website amongst the others!
