This has quickly become one of my favorite new shows in recent years and I’m happy to say that I started watching from the beginning on this one. In case you’re not one who’s caught up yet, this is a great opportunity to do so. The first season can still be easily acquired from Amazon, or if you have Netflix instant streaming. Then, you can watch (or re-watch) season two and voila! You’re all caught up in preparation before the season three premiere on 9/29. This year will also mark the debut of the spin-off show, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, which will start airing Thursday nights on ABC beginning on 10/10, so I highly recommend being caught up before then.
Season one of Once Upon a Time introduced us to the fictional town of Storybrooke, Maine and its residents. While it shouldn’t exist in our world the town, and its residents, are the result of a spell cast by the Evil Queen (a.k.a. Regina). In the first season, the townsfolk (complete with fake memories) don’t know who they are, and it was fun to discover with young Henry who they really are.
Season two starts with the aftermath of Regina’s spell being broken, although for some reason even though everyone knows who they are now, they are still in our world and didn’t get transported to their real home.
I love what Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (who also wrote for “Lost”) have done with this series. They’ve taken the characters from fairy tales we all know and put an interesting spin/twist on their version. Additionally, they don’t stick to just characters from Disney animated stories but also pull from other famous works of fiction like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Unlike other TV shows, it’s also very unpredictable. It’s interesting to see where the story takes the viewer and shocking to deal with some of the twists they throw at you.
While the show looks great on the Blu-ray set I have, it was really all about the bonus features for me. Since I was all caught up with having watched it during its regular airings, I started looking through the other goodies in the set.
A Fractured Family Tree shows us how intricately the characters are involved (and related) to each other. Admittedly, I hadn’t realized how quite confusing it really can be until watching this feature.
Part of the big tease leading up to season two was the introduction of Captain Hook to the lineup of fairy tale characters. Apparently he’s got quite the following as a character and fans won’t be disappointed with bonus feature Sincerely, Hook This feature gives us a look at the character of Hook as well as Colin O’Donoghue, the actor who portrays him. While we’re on the subject of Hook, did you know that Once Upon a Time’s fan-base (fandom) is referred to as “Oncers” and that Hook fandom is called “Hookers”? Ok, those of you who didn’t know that last one can keep laughing for a few minutes longer.
The below episode list contains summaries which could be spoiler-ish. If you haven’t seen season two yet and don’t wan’t to be disappointed, don’t click on the “Episode listing/summary” bar below. You have been warned!
