I missed seeing this one in the theater and was glad to finally get a chance to see it. The film stars Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as Cindy and Jim Green. The Greens are a married couple trying to start a family, until they find out that they aren’t able to have a baby. In an attempt to make themselves feel better upon hearing the bad news, the couple has some wine after dinner and Jim starts brainstorming about the qualities their kid would have. The two write these down on pieces of paper and bury it in a box in their garden. Later that evening, a mysterious storm appears directly over their home (in the middle of a drought, no less). A short while later, they discover a young boy covered in mud inside their house. It is here that we get our introduction and the real story begins.
The story is quite clever, told mostly through flashback as Jim and Cindy sit inside the office of an adoption agency. They tell Timothy’s story in answer to why they left one of the questions on their adoption paperwork blank.
I won’t give away any more so that I don’t spoil it for you. I will go on to say that this is one of the best movies you missed in 2012, so definitely go out and pick it up or rent it.
There’s some great performances from Garner and Edgerton and an outstanding portrayal of movie’s title character from relative newcomer CJ Adams, whom director Peter Hedges had previously worked with in the Steve Carrell dramedy “Dan in Real Life”.
Bonus features include a behind the scenes featurette on the making of the film which reveals the love that director Peter Hedges has for the story and why the actors in the film enjoy working with him so much.
From Academy Award-nominated writer/director Peter Hedges (Dan in Real Life, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), and starring Golden Globe® winner Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton, Oscar® winner Dianne Wiest and CJ Adams as Timothy Green, comes this highly imaginative story about a happily married couple who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. Then one stormy night young Timothy shows up on their doorstep. Soon they and the small town in which they live learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts. The story is written by Ahmet Zappa (“American Gangster,” “Changeling”).
