Now available on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack is Disney’s “Peter Pan”.
Peter Pan originally released in 1953. It was Disney’s 14th feature-length animated film and was the last animated film that Walt’s “nine old men” worked together on as directing animators.
The Blu-ray version of the film has undergone significant restoration as part of Disney’s “Diamond Edition” series. The paint is cleaned up and consistent in its coloring. The sound has been remastered as well, DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 if you have the Blu-ray, and 5.1 surround sound for the DVD release.
There’s no “pan and scan” or stretching to make the film fit the screen here. Peter Pan’s 1.33:1 original aspect ratio has been preserved. If you don’t want to see “black bars” on the sides of your screen, then watch it with the “Disney view” option enabled.
The only real problem I had with this release was the “Disney view” option I previously mentioned. As usual, there’s some wonderful side-art that fills the previously empty space on the sides of the screen. At some points in the film, however, the transition from one piece of side-art to the next (and then back again) seems to abrupt and even distracting at times. I seemed to notice this the most when the children were flying away from the Darling home with Peter Pan early on in the film.
Be sure to check out the bonus features on this one. I love anything that’s historically related to Walt and the Disney Company and there’s a feature called “Growing Up With Nine Old Men” that is definitely worth seeing.
All in all, another masterfully presented Blu-ray release and definitely worth picking up to rent or to add to your collection.
