Based on the 1984 live action film of the same name, Frankenweekie is a labor of love for Director Tim Burton. Burton was fired from working at Disney before the original film’s release back in 1984 (start of the “Eisner years”) but has obviously repaired that damage with blockbuster Disney films like 2010’s live action “Alice in Wonderland”.
I love Tim Burton’s films and I really think that he has really grown as a visionary throughout the years. He has a signature artistic style to his films and has embraced newer technologies to give a more realistic feel to elements in the otherwise unrealistic medium of stop motion film. Burton brings the art of stop motion filming to a while new level. There’s sky with moving clouds, real fire and even smoke. Burton also made it a point that the film be made in black and white (like his original short film), and since we are dealing with a comical take on the classic Frankenstein story, it just makes sense.
Danny Elfman did the music for the film and co-wrote the lyrics for “Elsa’s Song” which was sung by Winona Ryder. What would a Tim Burton film be without Elfman’s music?
Overall, I was very impressed with the film. Even more so after having watched through all the bonus features. The only bad thing I can say about this release is the packaging. On the 4-disc combo pack, there are 2 “pegs” for the discs, one on the left and right sides of the inner case. There were 2 discs stacked on top of each other on each of the pegs! I’m not a big fan of stacking discs in this manner, as it adds to the likelihood that they will get scratched over time.
It’s definitely worth adding this movie to your collection (especially if you’re a Tim Burton fan) and I’d say it’s family-friendly for kids around ages 8 and up.
From Disney and creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes the hilarious and offbeat “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town learn that getting a new ‘leash on life’ can be monstrous.
Complete with electrifying bonus features, “Frankenweenie” is alive with enchanting excitement in eye-popping Blu-ray 3D.
