Attention aspiring computer animators, Pixar will soon be offering a free version of their Renderman software.
There are, of course, a few catches. It’s the current version that’s out now (normally retailing for $495) after they release their upcoming new version at SIGGRAPH 2014 this August.
It’s for “non commercial” use, so while you’ll be able to publish your finished works you won’t be able to do anything with them that could make you a profit from it.
You’ll still need a program (like MAYA) to create in, Renderman just handles the rendering/animation.
Pixar is taking registrations now for interested parties and will contact you via email when the free version is available. For more info, click this link.
