It’s a sad thing to spend a lot of time and money making a movie that doesn’t go over well at the box office.

Mars Needs Moms opened last weekend (March 11th, 2011) and has not fared too well in it’s first week out.  Unfortunately, there’s not much out right now that could be considered a good alternative to seeing this movie.  Gnomeo and Juliet (also Disney) is about the only other movie you can take the kiddies to right now.  Johnny Depp’s “Rango” has a PG rating (as does Mars Needs Moms) but I’ve seen too many complaints from online reviews of those who went to see Rango saying it’s not a movie for kids, despite its PG rating.

There’s some really talented people in Mars Needs Moms like Seth Green (Family Guy, Robot Chicken) as Milo and Joan Cusack (Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3) as his mother.  Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) was even one of the producers.

ImageMovers Digital was responsible for the motion capture and CG.  They’ve done other movies with this same medium before like Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009) and Warner Bros. The Polar Express (2004).

Just to put things in perspective, some considered TRON: Legacy to be kind of a flop but comparitively it had a buget of about $170 million and made $44 million in its opening weekend.  Mars Needs Moms had a budget of about $150 million and only made $6.9 million on its opening weekend.

Maybe people are getting burned-out on 3D films or maybe it’s the poor economy causing people to make more informed decisions about their movie ticket purchases.  It might also be that online streaming services like Netflix have more people staying home to watch movies instead of shelling out big bucks to go see one in a theater.

This doesn’t mean that Mars Needs Moms is a bad movie.  I sincerely hope that those of you who go see it will share your opinions of it with us here.
