You’ve probably seen a teaser trailer for Disney’s “Planes” if you’ve watched any Disney or Pixar animation release on home video in the last year. They’ve been pretty actively promoting it as “coming soon”.
What I know from attending 2011’s D23 Expo is that it was originally slated to be a direct to video release in the Spring of 2013. Now, it looks like that’s been changed and it will now be released to theaters in 2D and Disney Digital 3D on August 9, 2013.
I also read somewhere that Jon Cryer may no longer be attached to the project, but I haven’t seen any official word from Disney on that. Cryer is the voice of Planes’ main character, Dusty Crophopper. While this could be just rumor, I’d be sad to hear if it were true. Cryer was so stoked when he talked about it to those of us who attended the Disney Studios presentation at the 2011 D23 Expo.
Here’s the (slightly) updated synopsis:
From above the world of “Cars” comes Disney’s “Planes,” an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty, a small-town plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to naval aviator Skipper, who helps Dusty qualify to take on Ripslinger, the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar. “Planes” takes off in theaters in 3D on Aug. 9, 2013, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.
