Disney’s Q3 2012 earnings call was held earlier today.  During the call, Robert A. Iger, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company made mention of some Avengers goodness!

It was confirmed that Director Joss Whedon will be tapped to pen and direct an Avengers sequel (known only as Avengers 2) when the time comes.  He’s also been recruited to work on a “Marvel-based” series for ABC television as well.

It’s unknown what the timetable for these projects is at the moment, but when you’re in charge of the studio that distributed the number one movie of the summer (and the third highest grossing film of all time) you’d better strike while the Iron Man is hot!

The Avengers wraps up “Phase 1” of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe which includes the following movies:

Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2
Captain America: The First Avenger
Marvel’s The Avengers

On deck next? Phase 2!
Here’s the projects and release dates for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date:

Iron Man 3 – May 13, 2013
Thor: The Dark World – November 8, 2013
Captain America: The Winter Soldier – April 4, 2014
Guardians of the Galaxy – August 1, 2014

Still on deck but with no release dates yet:

Ant Man
The Avengers 2

Since Iron Man, Thor and Captain America were all part of the team in the first Avengers movie, we’ve already got that covered.  Ant Man has also been an Avenger and will tie in to the next Avengers flick easily.  Guardians of the Galaxy have had their dealings and team-ups with The Avengers too and Drax’s (one of the Guardians) whole existence revolves around the elimination of Thanos.  Thanos was the being behind providing Loki with the army of Chitauri invaders for his conquest of Earth.

Can’t wait for Phase 2 to start!  In the meantime, I have the September 25th to look forward to as Marvel’s The Avengers releases to home video on that date!
