While nothing official has been confirmed yet, Devin Faraci over at Badass Digest reports that Disney and Lucasfilm could be targeting mid-December of 2015 for the film’s release.

While this defies the “all previous Star Wars films have released in May” logic, it really makes sense on a few different levels.

  1. Disney owns Star Wars now.  They can do whatever they feel is best for the continuing franchise.
  2. 2015 is already a pretty crowded year for some pretty big movie releases.  Disney alone already has 6 movies slated for release that year, one of which will be the next Avengers pic “The Avengers: Age of Ultron”.  Other Disney Studios films for 2015 include Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Finding Dory, Ant-Man, and Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella movie.  Based on the success of the first Avengers film, it’s pretty safe to say that Disney doesn’t want Star Wars competing with The Avengers sequel’s box office, which will probably have a May 2015 release.
  3. J.J. Abrams will have about another half a year to make the next Star Wars movie amazing!  Those of you who have seen what he’s done with the rebooted Star Trek franchise should agree with me on this point.

While Disney hasn’t officially confirmed a release date for Star Wars Episode VII, I’ll be sure to let everyone know when we have something official.
