From Touchstone Pictures upcoming “Gnomeo and Juliet” (in theaters February 11, 2011) comes news that Sir Elton John and Lady Gaga have teamed up for a song that will be featured in the movie’s soundtrack.  The pairing of Gaga and John really isn’t that unlikely when you consider that with her outlandish outfits and stage performances she’s somewhat of an Elton John for this generation.  The pair had also previously collaborated earlier this year for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards.

The movie is a retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Garden gnomes Gnomeo (voiced by James McAvoy) and Juliet (voiced by Emily Blunt) have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors.  But with plastic pink flamingoes and lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness?

This movie has had a very troubled history and (good or bad) it’s sort of relieving to have it finally see the light of day.  Originally pitched to (and approved by) Disney before the PIXAR merger took place, the movie was originally to be produced by Disney Feature Animation.  After the PIXAR merger John Lasseter (who was given autonomous control over Disney’s projects) shut down production on it and a then, very early version of Toy Story 3.  Miramax Pictures (also Disney owned) later picked up the film’s production and worked on it until production of all Miramax films was shut down due to the pending sell-off of Miramax.  Now the film is to be released under Touchstone Pictures (again Disney) and will hit theaters (barring any other unforeseen complications) on 2/11/11
