I just got out of a screening of Disney’s Maleficent and immediately wanted to tell you (spoiler-free) about it.

The movie was simply amazing, Angelina Jolie totally rocked it as the titular character!  Anyone who’s seen the trailer (conveniently embedded below) should already know not to expect a live-action version of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.  If not, you are going to be disappointed.

It’s not a perfect film, but I have to respect it for what it is.  This is Maleficent’s story and it becomes very apparent near its conclusion that the fairy tale we thought we knew is wrong.  I’m not going to give anything away except to say that there is hope of redemption for Maleficent and the curse she put upon Aurora.

My only issue with it was some of the computer animation.  It, namely when it came to Aurora’s three guardian fairies, seemed a bit too cartoonish.  If it wasn’t styled by some of the computer animators that worked on Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, I would be quite surprised because that’s the look they ended up with.  Jolie looked amazing as Maleficent in both the good and bad versions of her.  There were some scenes where her makeup effects for her stylized cheekbones didn’t quite look right but I think that’s more due to lighting than anything else.  Maleficent was made for a darkly lit environment, try to put her in the sunlight and it just looks a bit “off”.

Read other reviews of this film and I’m sure they’ll be mixed.  Some will love it and some will hate it.  As for me, I’ll stand by my review of it as a solid re-imagining of the classic tale.
